Birthday pictures of a woman who had just turned fifty surfaced the internet two weeks ago and literally “broke” it. It wasn’t so much of how creative the pictures were but rather how smooth her skin was and how young she looked at the age of fifty. If I were to take a wild guess, I would have picked thirty years old.

Aging though a natural part of life for both men and women, doesn’t mean it is always pleasant. There is a constant reality check and concern for the health and well-being as the days go by, both mentally, physically, physiologically and otherwise.

Taking care of our body is a long term relationship that we all must commit to hence, the need to take the necessary healthy steps below needed for our body to be refreshed, strengthened and revitalized.

Water accounts for 60 percent of our body and is very necessary for the cells and organs to function properly. The kidney depends on water to help filter waste from the blood and prevent urinary tract infections and kidney stones. Failure to stay hydrated results in lowering the blood volume, which in turn makes the heart work harder to pump blood making everyday activities like exercise or walking, difficult.

Currently, the world struggles with the corona virus pandemic, more and more people are trying to protect themselves against the virus. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) have advised that having and maintaining a good immune system is one step closer to fighting the virus. Having a good immune system would mean quitting destructive habits like smoking, too much intake of alcohol, not sleeping properly, etc. Smoking and Alcohol damages your lungs and liver, and having less time to sleep is overloading your heart and cells. This can be very destructive to the body and foil your longevity and reverse-aging plans.

We are so much of what we put into our body and not so much of what we put on our body. The world has been on lockdown for a couple of months now. The kitchen and freezer has also welcomed an increased number of visitations. It is important to note that eating comes with discipline and eating right as the type and amount of food we eat can help us age better or not. Foods like:

  • Fish which have a long chain of omega-3 fats and are beneficial against heart disease, inflammation among many other diseases are advised to be taken.
  • Whole grains, fruits and vegetables are also advised to be taken. These are very low in calories and contain strong antioxidants that help reduce the risk of heart diseases, cancer, etc.

While eating right, consider eating with moderation. Losing excess pounds means less strain on your system. Find a nutritionist or a dietician who will guide you on a diet plan or simply limit your food intake especially those with high cholesterol like; poultry with skin (chicken skin), red meat, commercially fried foods, sausages, pizza, pork, etc and reduce your sugar (fizzy drinks and others) and salt intake.

The peace that comes with forgiving easily cannot be traded for gold. It gives you a certain level of clarity, frees your mind from clogged memories and helps your mental health.

On the other hand, having a regular exercise routine will help control your weight, reduce the risk of heart diseases, help your body manage blood sugar and insulin levels. Exercising will also help improve your mental health and capacity, strengthen your bone and muscles, reduce your risk of some cancers and increase your chances of living longer and looking younger.
