Davido & Popcaan’s bromance produces a “Risky” song and it’s a hit on first listen
‘Both act have had a bleak, broken and rough music romance from the beginning and it has brought about an intense copulated ending; a risky hit song is born’
On Shade 45 Sirius XM Radio session somewhere in America, sometime in March 2019, during his US media tour, Davido dropped one of the weakest bars of an Afrobeats artist on a freestyle session. This quickly became a sensation on the social media as music fans went on a full mob on him, trolling his failings on the simple uptime Kodak black “Zeze” instrumentals, that any artists with a handful of talents can be outstanding with matching rhyming words together.
Is Davido Umpteenth at this? Yes!
This is not the first time OBO, the father of David Adedeji Adeleke Jnr, has made a mess while on a freestyle session. At a Tim Westwood session in 2013, the ‘Blow My Mind’ crooner who publicizes the catchy phrase; ‘Shekpe’ at given opportunities, let his fans down with a low delivery freestyle.
Everyone knows Davido is not good at freestyles, but he has not let that deter his work rate and progress; however, even when some fans are swift in reminding him of these freestyle misses, he does not mind refining and turning the dirty log clogging his creative eyes to a shining gold. Lemons thrown at him, is grabbed, squeezed to a mashed form to get its bitter juice into a cup, while making a lemonade out of it in the process.
In 2017, after losing two of his close friends and business ally; DJ Olu and Tagbo, with police involvement and facing heavy media criticism; Davido came back strong with a rebuttal storyline in the song ‘FIA’, cleared the air; batched his critics and delivered a sumptuous hit song that would reign heavily into 2018. His latest song “Risky” is one of those lemonade’s move.
Prior to these, during his saga with Sophie Momodu, his first baby mama, Davido delivered an uppercut jab to Dele Momodu, Sophie’s uncle who got involved in the saga with the catchy line ‘Dele na my boy‘ 0n his verse in Falz ‘Bahd Baddo Baddest’ song.
Music artists cannot be separated from their works. Their emotions are so intertwined with it, that you can feel their soul all over most songs they release. Freestyles are not different from these. Some go prepared for sessions, others just pop up to face any beat thrown at them by their hosts, and at will they deliver masterclass bars, verifying their talents outside their book of songs, and familiar recording booths.
Each time some fans attacked the DMW boss using his failed freestyle travails, he felt that in his marrow.
In an attempt to clean up his mess, while creating a rebuttal narrative again with a song, OBO has teamed up with Popcaan, Jamaican dancehall sensation to drop “Risky”.
On the day of “Risky’s” release; like a well packaged PR plan, even when it looks real; two sisters cried out of Davido impregnating one of them, then apologize as Davido threatened arrest. Was that even necessary?.
This is not the first time Davido has teamed up with Andrae Hugh Sutherland also known as Popcaan, who is signed to Drake ‘OVO’ Label. Both acts have had a brotherly bromance that has lasted for a while. They worked with each other in 2017, to drop ‘My Story’, where Davido served one of the best hooks ever in his music career on an up tempo island syrup, with great dance appeal, a perfect submission of their effort to arrive at a great song.
In 2018, they teamed up again on a song “Dun Rich”, a slow tempo fluid dancehall tune, that they affirm to their women what they will do for them because they are money rich.
Davido and Popcaan have worked together, scored greats songs, but “Risky” accommodates elements that might get it spilled to worldwide acceptance.
