You stare at the international news and watch as the death toll appears on the screen – 2800 people worldwide. The news anchor reads on, expressing the uncertainty of health officials in and out of China. Thousands of people have now been quarantined as a result of the corona virus (COVID-19) spread and your first thought goes like ‘how did that escalate so quickly?’ You switch to the national dailies and see the shocker, one newly confirmed case of the infection in Nigeria by the Nigerian Centre for disease control (NCDC).
You are agitated now, scared even. China, Iran, Syria, South Korea, Italy, Japan, the USA, about 50 countries with reported cases. Filled hospital beds, the word around is that hospitals in China are now turning back suspected cases because both human capital and health facilities have been exhausted. Nigeria now joins the group of countries with reported cases. With an overwhelming demand for face masks and other protective gears, medics and public health experts, the world gets ready for an epidemic with a capacity to wipe out a population with just one sneeze.
But are you ready?
Are you ready to prevent spread by washing your hands at least for 20 seconds with soap and water? Can you keep an alcohol-based hand sanitizer by your side and actually use it? Will you stop coughing without covering your mouth? Will you use and dispose your tissue everytime you sneeze or blow your nose? Will you stop self medication/let’s go and see oga Doctor at Junction so that he can mix drugs for you and report to the hospital immediately you see symptoms like fever, cough and shortness of breath? Are you ready to protect yourself by keeping a distance of a least, 2 metres away from a person coughing or sneezing?
While governments around the world place a hawk eye on borders to ensure newly suspected cases are quarantined and health workers do their best to manage any infection, we can only do our best to protect ourselves and our loved ones. Report suspected cases to the Nigerian centre for disease control via this toll free number: 0800-970000-10.
