We all want to be happy. Happiness means different things to different people. Whether it’s to acquire the latest cars, be able to afford luxury items, have our favorite food all day every day even though it might not be good for our bodies, talk to our favorite people and the list goes on. But as humans, we’re constantly plagued with negative thoughts and emotions which sometimes spoil our mood for the entire day.
Like anything else in life, it takes constant mindfulness and practice to make our lives more wholesome and to cultivate all-round happiness. Here are the top 5 things you didn’t know could make you happy.
1. Have a routine
Planning your schedule a day before and having a to-do list brings order and calm to your day and I’m sure it’ll make you happy or happier as the case may be, at least it makes me happy. The feeling I get ticking activities off my list gives me pure joy. The little things like brewing a cup of tea every morning just puts a smile on my face because I love tea. Having a routine is everything as it sets your mood for that day.
2. Gratitude Note
I haven’t done this in a while but it brings me immense joy and happiness. I got this technique from a book I read a few years ago and this idea struck a chord in me. I send all my close friends emails, not texts or phone calls but emails, I mean the internet is the safest place to keep certain memories that you cherish because phones can crash, messages can get deleted but emails are secure except the internet gets deleted, lol.
I send my friends gratitude notes, thanking them on how they’ve been there for me through thick and thin, I remind them of memories we shared and how I cherish them and most times these emails end up getting everyone emotional and that brings me so much happiness.
Cultivate a heart of gratitude and you’ll feel better and begin to appreciate even the minute things in your life.
3. Track your Expenses.
Talking about this is getting me excited already. A friend of mine introduced me to this finance tracking app recently and it’s been a blast. Knowing where my money goes every month not only makes me happy but also makes me plan and spend wisely. This might seem very inconsequential, but if you’re like most people who wonder at the end of every month how their money finished so quickly, then you’ll know how much of a huge relief this is.
4. Do what you love.
Life is too short to be miserable at what you do or be joyless in life. Build a path in an area that motivates you and will contribute to your happiness, not one that you regret and constantly saps your joy. There’s only one life, live it. I’ve found that going to the barber for a cut makes me happy. I always smile sitting in that chair. The anticipation of the outcome of the look just makes me happy and I always look forward to going back. Being a baldie has definitely increased my happiness level and it’s definitely here to stay.
5. Hang out with people you love.
Moods can be contagious. The type of energy the people you hang out with have matters and contributes to your own mood as well. If you’re surrounded with people who always complain and find the bad in everything, then you might always feel bummed. Be it your partner or friends, choose the kind of energy you want surrounding you. Hanging out with people we love and cherish is definitely a happy place to be.
