The popular philosophy that says that ‘’there is dignity in labour’’ is the true story of Mrs. Victoria Justin, a native of Nsukkara Offot, married with three kids and owns a small shop located at a remote area in Nsukkara, where she makes all kinds of bags to earn a living.
In our quest to bring to the eyes of the media Entrepreneurs of this calibre who are living their dreams, we went up close and personal with her as she took us through the hustle, challenges and victories thus far.
- Brief Description About Her
My name is Mrs. Victoria Justin Okon, I hail from Nsukkara Offot in Akwa Ibom State. As far back in year 2000, I was able to learn how to sew and design bags from my late sister who had a formal training on how to design bags at ‘Ariaria’ market in Aba. I started making bags professionally in 2002 with a sewing machine and I’ve been doing this till today.
- Why make bags?
I love making bags because it is something I have deep passion for and I derive so much joy and fulfillment doing this. Through this business, I’ve been able to pay my bills and also support my family.
- Type of Bags She does
I design and sew well-tailored custom-made bags; school bags for kids, travel bags, launch bags and anything bag. (laughs)
So far, the journey has been amazing since I started. My major challenge has been how to expand the business and getting more professional tools like industrial machine, which could make the job easier and faster. The location of my shop which is situated at a remote area in Nsukkara has also been part of the challenges I have, because it limits me from getting access to wider number of customers. In all sincerity, I’m grateful to God for the victories regardless of all the aforementioned challenges.
- On Sales
The business is moving gradually and we are happy about the little progress so far. We make sales every day, but, we usually have increase in sales during the month of September and October when school resumes. Also, people come from far and wide to buy and also place order. The Prizes of my bag ranges from 1000naira to 10,000naira, depending on the size and spec required.
- About Training Of Interns
Due to the little success and growth we’ve had overtime, people in my locality and from far places bring their wards for training. On records, I’ve been able to train twenty girls who are already doing great. About three of my interns left me and established their shops.
I’ve had so much testimonials and referrals from my customers. Most of them who are satisfied with the quality and durability of my bag keeps referring their friends and relatives to me because they realized the bags I produce is very authentic.
